There has been a global attack on CMS scripts mostly Wordpress sites. It happened last year and there was more than 90,000 IP addresses using for the attack and now the same attack is happening. The attack causes the server to run out or resources like to Apache/PHP/MySQL/etc and the server will eventually go crashed.
We have protected the server by creating rule that will block all ip from accessing the wp-admin and white-listed only the known ips from AIRTEL, ETISALAT, GLO, MTN MULTILINKS, VISAFONE and others. And if you are unable to login to the admin end, you can save the following code on your .htaccess file and save it after replacing the ip with your connection ip. You can add a connection ip by adding a comma (,) and space then the new additional ip e.g. 41.203.69.3, 105.112.8.20
You may have a dynamic ip, if your ip changes, you can replace the new one and save as it.

For those that are using Joomla, you can counter this by using Max Failed Login Attempts plugin for Joomla or such. but this can be done by users individually and you can have more details instructions on the link bellow.
