Harare - Newspapers in Zimbabwe delighted on Friday in analysing the facial expressions of supporters of beleaguered Vice President Joice Mujuru brave enough to attend the first day of the ruling Zanu-PF's congress.

Mujuru, 59, boycotted the event or "remained AWOL," as the official Herald put it.

She is almost certain to be demoted during the congress, following a sustained campaign against her by First Lady Grace Mugabe.

However, some of her top-level allies were daring enough to show their faces at the congress on Thursday.

Politburo members Tendai Savanhu and Charles Tavengwa - both accused of backing Mujuru - were shouted down when they entered the marquee in the newly-named Robert Mugabe Square.

Supporters of Grace Mugabe shouted "Savanhu, Tavengwa, Gamatox, Wrong Basket." Gamatox, a pest-killer, is the nickname given to Mujuru's faction of Zanu-PF.

The Gamatox faction calls the opposing faction, led by Justice Minister Emmerson Mnangagwa, Weevils.

Another suspected Mujuru supporter, Webster Shamu, the ICT, postal and courier services minister, "appeared uneasy, spending most of his time outside the tent during the president's address," the Herald reported.

The private Newsday published a picture of "subdued-looking" Energy Minister Dzikamai Mavhaire, who was recently accused of using funds from the struggling state ZESA power company to prop up Mujuru's faction
As for Mujuru herself, several Zimbabweans speculated she was at home watching proceedings from the comfort of her living room.

Twitter user @malcolm0723 asked: "Where is Joice Mujuru? And what is she thinking? It's a pity we don't have journalists."
