A man in his 20’s will be sentenced next week for repeatedly raping his girlfriend while she slept.
The Norwegian national had pleaded guilty to sexual assault between October of 2011 and April of 2012 in a Dublin apartment.
The couple had been living together for more than 6 months when the sexual abuse came to light – when the victim woke one night, felt wet and was confused. The accused admitted that he had been having sex with her.
Emails between the accused and his victim formed the cornerstone of the prosecution. In one, the accused wrote that he couldn’t understand why he had done what he did.
It was for his own “short term gratification”, he said and added that he had convinced himself that it was a victimless crime.
He also wrote that he had penetrated her up to ten times as she slept and kissed and felt her several times a week.
In a victim impact statement, the victim said that a year and a half ago, life had become so unbearable that she took an overdose.
Memory loss, anxiety, anger and panic had become prevalent emotions and that she could no longer sleep properly after being regularly sexually assaulted and raped in her sleep.
Beds no longer represent a place of sanctuary for her, she told the court, but rather a place of torture.
Judge Patrick Mc Carthy reserved judgement until next week.
