SINGAPORE: A 52-year-old man was on Friday (Aug 28) sentenced to nine weeks in jail for obtaining the sexual services of an underaged prostitute, and for an unrelated charge of gaming in public.

Lim Yew Hock paid the victim’s pimp S$300 on Oct 15, 2014 for her services, under the impression that the girl was 19 years old.

The victim, who was 14 at that time, had arrived in Singapore from Vietnam only the day before to work as a freelance hostess and prostitute. Lim met the victim and her pimp at a coffeeshop along Lorong 13 Geylang, and he agreed to book her for sexual services. He took the girl to St James Power Station, a night club at Harbourfront area. They later went to Lim’s house and had sexual intercourse.

The victim later lodged a police report, as she no longer wanted to prostitute herself. Her Vietnamese pimp is still at large.

In court on Friday, Deputy Public Prosecutor Zhang Hongchuan noted that Lim was more than three times the victim’s age. However, Lim’s lawyer, Edmund Wong, argued that “due diligence” had been carried out by his client, as the victim’s passport had allegedly been checked by security at the night club to verify her age. Only those above 18 of age were allowed to enter.

Mr Wong submitted that six weeks’ jail would be sufficient to deter Lim, as compared to the prosecution’s submission of nine to 12 weeks’ jail. However, District Judge Low Wee Ping said that this would be “manifestly inadequate”, and sentenced Lim to nine weeks, including two weeks for the unrelated charge of gaming in public.

For obtaining the sexual services of a person under 18 years of age, Lim could have faced up to seven years in jail, a fine or both.

For gaming in public, Lim could have been jailed for up to six months, fined up to S$5,000 or punished with both.
