CIA director Mike Pompeo has warned that North Korea is on the verge of being able to hit the US with a nuclear missile.

He said though military force remains an option Washington still prefers diplomacy and sanctions.

North Korea claims it already has the capability to strike the us.

Speaking at the foundation for defense of democracies, Pompeo said North Korea is "close enough now in their capabilities.

He warned that Pyongyang’s missile expertise is now advancing so quickly that it is hard for us intelligence to be sure when it would succeed.

Us secretary of state, Rex Tillerson had also insisted president Donald Trump wanted to resolve the confrontation with north Korea through diplomacy.

Tillerson statement came after trump had publicly told him not to waste time seeking talks with Kim Jong-un.
