We’ve noticed an increase in scams being circulated on normally safe platforms

such as Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube. These scams are sophisticated, often

using celebrities or trusted companies as a way of enticing victims. Their goal? Your

money.

Here’s how you can avoid financial scams:

1. Check the URL

Each time you click-through on any advertisement make sure the URL matches

the original content.

2. Approach with caution

It’s always better to be safe rather than sorry. If something seems too good to be

true, it probably is.

3. Be suspicious

Just because an initiative appears to be supported by a celebrity or company

doesn’t mean it’s real.

How do financial scams work?

There's a huge range of scams going around at the moment, we’ll talk you through

how some of the most common ones work so you know exactly what to look out for

Facebook and social media ads

The ads used in these scams redirect you to a website designed to

look like a local news site. These are often crypto based scams which

prompt you to sign up, luring you into an email conversation.

Phishing emails

Emails are sent promising to earn you high amounts of cash based of

just very low investments. A PDF is attached to the emails, with

messages promoting the fake platform they want you to invest in.

Convince you to hand over money

Scammers will try to get your money by convincing you to buy fake

shares, getting your bank credentials, or stealing your identity. They

also use bots (software applications that run tasks over the internet) to

trick you.
