Saucy scientists identify worrying conditions which even the lustiest of lotharios could be hiding from the world


You may think that being a sex addict requires a certain level of brilliance in the bedroom.

But fresh research has found that people who are hooked on sex are likely to be suffering from problems including erectile dysfunction.

A team of scientists from the sex-studying departments of universities in Germany and Croatia surveyed more than 1,000 men to discover some "surprising" facts about people suffering from hypersexuality - or sex addiction.

This troubling ailment shouldn't make us envy sufferers, because as well as involving a great deal of concerted coupling, hypersexuality also forces people to engage in troubling, anti-social levels of "solitary sexuality".

Sex addicts also become hooked on porn, addicted to buying sex or dependent on calling erotic phone lines.

But researchers found they were also more likely to suffer from erectile dysfunction and "sexual boredom", which can make it impossible to hold down a healthy, loving relationship with just one person.

"While an examination of the relationship between erectile dysfunction and hypersexuality may appear somewhat surprising at first glance, clinicians recognise the role of erectile dysfunction as a feature of hypersexuality." the team of academics wrote in The Journal of Sexual Medicine.

"Indeed, dysfunction (accompanied by a low desire for partnered sexual activity) is a common observation in the clinical practice with patients seeking help for excessive sexual behavior, whereas these men seem to frequently use pornography and masturbate."

Solo sex acts are often a sign of hypersexuality, because they are "used to cope boredom associated with relationship difficulties".

Perhaps unsurprisingly, sex addicts may find it very difficult to hold down a long term love affair - particularly if their private parts are unwilling to perform their erotic role when required.

"Erectile dysfunction could have an impact on the men’s overall psychological well-being in terms of masculinity, self-esteem, and sexual satisfaction," the researchers added.

 

"Within the sexual relationship a lack of sexual self esteem associated with ED could be related to withdrawal from partnered sexuality and intimacy which in turn could strain the partnership."

Sex addicts are also more likely to use pornography, masturbate frequently, and engage in cybersex, as well as seeking out sordid encounters with "consenting adults", the researchers continued.

They are also likely to suffer from depression, become crippled by shame and become gripped with paraphilic (sexually deviant or perverted) acts.

“In some men, hypersexual behavior may serve as a coping mechanism for sexual boredom," said Verena Klein, lead author of the study and a director of Institute for Sexual Research and Forensic Psychiatry.

"In addition, erectile dysfunction within an intimate relationship can accompany this simultaneously."

The other authors of the report are Tanja Jurin, Peer Briken and Aleksandar Štulhofer.
